Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Camaro

Back in 1967, Chevrolet unveiled the first Camaro. When asked what the word Camaro meant, a representative responded: “A Camaro is a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.” Now in 2017, we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Camaro.

Before looking ahead, we need to pay respect to what came before. The Camaro wasn’t built in a generation – it evolved through six. Each innovation has been the starting point for the next.

CamaroWhen it first came out, the Camaro was fit for the times. 1967 was a time of active, youthful movement which was perfect for getting behind the wheel of the First Generation.

The Second Generation was the personification of its fans, sharing in creative passion; passion for performance and style. This passion stuck through every generation that followed.

The 80’s was an era of excess and with the Third Generation, the sky was the limit. This Camaro could go from the showroom to the drag strip.

The Fourth Generation was a little bit of everything. It was living on its legacy in a new era.

Then it was gone! But the true Camaro fans knew it wasn’t the end – this incredible sports car would be back one day. Next came the Fifth Generation; Chevrolet looked back to the first generation models for inspiration and took what worked well and spruced it up with a new contemporary design.

The Camaro has carved a distinctive place among American muscle cars with passionate owners who appreciate engine horsepower and impressive handling.

Now it’s time for the Sixth Generation; tying in key, track-related Camaro features from the past and bringing them into the current day, making it leaner, stronger, and faster – because there is no feeling like driving a Camaro. The 50th Anniversary Edition honors the distinctive looks and performance that have always set the Camaro apart. It is now available in both Coupe and Convertible 2LT and 2SS models.

GM Introduces Take 2 Internship for Women

“. . . you’ll polish your skills, acquire new ones, and restore the confidence you need to launch a new phase in your professional journey . . . Your comeback story begins now.” – GM Website

Earlier this year, General Motors announced that they would be introducing a pivotal and innovative internship program to their line-up. Aimed at experienced women in the field of engineering, the program offers women a chance to re-enter the workforce after a 2, or more, year hiatus from their career.

Take 2 is a 12-week internship program for women  with technical backgrounds in vehicle engineering, manufacturing engineering, or manufacturing operations. Women involved with Take 2 will receive quality training, professional development, and the chance to network with other technical leaders to gain a better understanding of GM’s functional areas and structure.

To increase STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) – a larger initiative powered by the Society of Women Engineers and iRelaunch – Take 2 provides participants with the opportunity to “refresh their workforce skills and rebuild their network,” all while being able to work with actual engineering situations at GM.

“GM is proud to be a founding member of the STEM Re-entry Task force, and understands there are many high-caliber, technical women who have taken a break from their careers and are ready to come back to work but may feel out of touch with their former professional network.” – Kristen Siemen, executive director Global Thermal Engineering and executive champion of the program.

Take 2 began on April 1, 2016 and sought out talented and capable women who were looking to tackle challenging opportunities in the vehicle workforce. John Quattrone, Senior VP of Global Human Resources explains that Take 2 is a “win-win opportunity for women and GM”, stating that the opportunity is one of the many of the commitments GM has made to support women’s careers in the car industry.

Learn more about the Take 2 internship and other career re-entry opportunities at General Motors through their website.

GM Thanks Customers For 500 Million Rides in GM-Branded Vehicles

2015-culture-500-million-mh-1-1280x551

General Motors has announced the assembly of the 500 millionth GM-branded vehicle. This colossal achievement puts the GM brand miles ahead of any other automaker.

In recognition of this major accomplishment, GM would like to thank all who have owned a GM-branded vehicle over the years. There have been a half-billion GM-branded vehicles manufactured over 106 years, but it’s our customers who create memories, celebrate successes and reach countless milestones along life’s journey. You give GM vehicles life by making them a part of yours.

To show our enduring gratitude, GM CEO Mary Barra and GM Executive Vice President Alan Batey surprised wounded veteran and loyal Chevrolet owner Trent Brining with the keys to a new 2016 Malibu during an event at the Fairfax Assembly Plant. The celebration was attended by customers, employees and dealers.

Among some of the other big announcements, Alan Batey noted that GM will invest $174 million toward state-of-the-art equipment and advancements at the Fairfax Assembly Plant and also recently shared a plan to invest $5.4 billion in GM U.S. manufacturing to enable vehicle improvements that benefit customers.

Here’s to another 500 million and beyond.

Chevrolet Racing

2014-chevrolet-MOSPO-indycar-mh-1480x503When Chevrolet decided to return to IndyCar racing three years ago, the manufacturer deemed three factors critical:

  • An engine package – small displacement (2.2L), higher performance (V6) with turbocharging and direct injection – relevant to current and future production models
  • Fuel efficiency through renewable fuels
  • Brand identity using Chevrolet engineers to design an aero kit specific to Chevrolet-powered cars

With the first two factors in place, Chevrolet returned to the series in 2012 and promptly won back-to-back-to-back manufacturer’s championships and two driver’s titles.

This year, Chevrolet-powered Verizon IndyCar Series race cars have a decidedly different appearance: they feature a Chevrolet-developed aero package, which was allowed for the first time under series rules.

“The aero kit gives us the ability to differentiate the Chevy-powered cars from the rest of the field, and take responsibility for a larger portion of the performance of the car via aerodynamics,” said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing program manager for Verizon IndyCar Series. “This also provides additional opportunities for two-way tech transfer between the motorsports group and production vehicle engineering.”

Chevrolet introduced its road-course aero kit to the media recently at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“This is an important milestone in Chevrolet’s involvement in IndyCar racing,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “We focused on developing an aerodynamic package that delivers an optimal balance of downforce and drag, along with integrated engine performance. It’s a total performance package.”

“This new aero kit provides Chevrolet drivers the capability to enter and exit corners faster, while maintaining high speeds on the straights,” said Berube.

With such a strong focus on speed and cornering, it was no surprise when the series’ teams got together for a preseason test at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama, Will Power – the 2014 series champion and driver of the No. 1 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet – recorded the quickest lap. Power covered the 17-turn, 2.38-mile course in 1:07.3118 (123.010 mph) as Chevrolets turned in the top six fastest speeds.

“The Promoter Test at Barber Motorsports Park is always an exciting moment in the IndyCar season when our Chevy engineers get to see the fruits of their off-season labor in the hands of our Team Chevy racing partners,” Berube said.

“This year, the culmination of multiple years of effort into the Chevrolet aero kit was rolled out during this two-day test and so far, the results were in line with our expectations. Together with our teams, we learned more about the strengths and weaknesses of our road-course configuration and engine installation.”

The first race of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series was March 29 on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla. Chevrolet swept the top six finishing positions. For more information about the all-new Chevrolet IndyCar aero package, visit the GM Media Site.

Billboard and Chevrolet are teaming up to celebrate the ingenuity of this year’s hit makers with the new Milestone Award at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 19. Fans can vote for their favorite Milestone artist online and enter a contest to win an opportunity to present the award live at this year’s event alongside Cee Lo Green.

The newly announced editorial award will go to an innovative artist that achieved a notable chart milestone over the past year. The six finalists for the 2013 Milestone Award presented by Chevrolet were announced today on Billboard.com — they are: Justin Bieber, The Band Perry, Miguel, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars and Pitbull.

Voting is now open on Billboard.com/milestone. The six finalists will be narrowed down to three finalists, who will be unveiled on the website in mid-April. Voting will then continue all the way through the live Billboard Music Awards broadcast, culminating with the announcement of the award winner toward the end of the show.

“The addition of the Milestone Award gives us the opportunity to recognize truly creative artists that are breaking boundaries with their contribution to today’s musical landscape,” said Bill Werde, editorial director, Billboard. “These awards are for artists who have created music and accomplishments that are part of history. It’s an honor to work with a historic brand like Chevrolet to bring them into focus as part of this year’s Billboard Music Awards.”

“This is a perfect opportunity for Chevrolet to bring together two important pieces of its history, ingenuity and music,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. “The innovation in music today is represented by the nominees for this year’s Milestone Award.”

The 2013 Billboard Music Awards will broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 19 at 8/7c on ABC.

Five Goals for designing the Corvette C7 Stingray: Kirk Bennion, Corvette Exterior Design Manager

Kirk Bennion2 - exterior design manager - corvetteIn a recent interview with Autoweek Design Forum,  Kirk Bennion was asked: Was it daunting to work on a car with such a rich history?  His answer:I tell people, you acquire a tribal knowledge of the car. I learned some things while working on the Corvette from 1986 to 1989. And you do realize that one, you have to be very respectful of the car because it is such a huge icon, but there’s also a lot of effort that you have to put in a car like this. There’s a knowledge that you have to have for the past cars and there’s an expectation, but there’s also a willingness to take those cars to the next level. It’s a big-time commitment.”

The team had five goals when they began work on the 2014 Corvette Stingray. He says working on developing a Corvette is a “special deal … and we work on it as much as we can and as hard as we can.” Delve more into Kirk’s passion by checking out the video.

We think the team met those goals.  We hope you do too….

Chevrolet Introduces the 2014 Camaro Z28

2014 Camaro Z28 - 011Unveiled at the New York International Auto Show – Z/28

Chevrolet introduced the restyled 2014 Camaro line at the New York Auto Show, including the return of the Z/28, the most iconic model in Camaro history.  A refreshed Camaro for the 2014 model year. Most importantly, with the new Camaro comes the resurrection of the Z/28 moniker, which will be powered by the amazing 7.0L LS7 V8 engine mated to a six-speed Tremec TR6060 manual transmission. This puts the output of the Z/28 at 500 howling horsepower, and 470 pounds-feet of torque, fitting perfectly between the 426 horsepower Camaro SS, and the 580 horsepower Camaro ZL1. In many track-oriented circles, the 2014 Camaro Z/28 is perhaps the most capable Camaro ever.

2014 Camaro Z28 - 001

2014 Camaro Z28 - 002       2014 Camaro Z28 - 003

Chevy claims that the 2014 Camaro Z/28 is an average of three seconds faster per lap than the more powerful ZL1. This is thanks to chassis revisions that allow the Z/28 to grip at up to 1.05 lateral G forces. Then there are the Brembo brakes, which provide 1.5G of stopping force. And last, but certainly not least, is the fact that the Z/28 is 300 pounds lighter than the mighty ZL1, thanks to several incremental tweaks, ranging from thinner rear window glass, to lighter wheels. And it still has its second row of seats.

2014 Camaro Z28 - 005Inside, the Z/28 is treated with Recaro racing seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and seat cut outs that seem ready for five-point harnesses.

2014 Camaro Z28 - 006

To keep the Z/28 stable on the track, it features a full aerodynamic package consisting of a front splitter, underbody panel, fender flares, extended rocker panels, and a rear spoiler and functional diffuser. The 20-inch wheels used on the SS and ZL1 were swapped for 19-inch wheels, which reduce total unsprung weight by a total of 42 lb and lower the car’s center of gravity 33 millimeters. Rather than utilizing different-sized wheels and tires front to rear, all four corners of the Z/28 are shod with 305/30ZR-19 Pirelli PZero Trofeo R tires — the ultra-high-performance tire’s production debut — that are believed to be the widest front tires on any production car.

2014 Camaro Z28 - 009

“As the ultimate track-capable Camaro, this car restores the mission of the original Z/28, and serves as a testament to the expertise of Chevrolet as the best-selling brand of performance cars,” said Mark Reuss, president, GM North America. “The build sheet is the wish list of any racer: lightweight, high-revving, dry-sump LS7 engine; carbon-ceramic brakes; integrated coolers for track use; true aerodynamic downforce, and a significant reduction in curb weight. This car could only come from Chevrolet, and could only be called the Z/28.”

It’s a beauty!

“Beta” Cars

Beta cars - 001In the introduction to a January 2009 BusinessWeek excerpt from his book “What Would Google Do?,” author Jeff Jarvis extolled the idea that the Detroit automakers should start releasing cars in “beta” form, much the way the Silicon Valley tech giant had been doing with its software products. Despite the obvious dangers of open public beta testing in the car business, it seems that a number of automakers, including Tesla, Fisker, BMW, Ford, General Motors, have been doing exactly that to varying degrees over the past several years.

Beta cars - 002

The concept of structured alpha and beta testing of software has its origins with IBM. Back in the 1950s, the computing pioneer defined alpha testing as the internal product verification before a public announcement. Beta testing was the verification of the product by users before it got released to production.

Until Google went all-in on publicly releasing software that was labeled as beta in the past decade, beta releases were mostly restricted to select groups of testers who committed to providing regular feedback about problems in the product. Google’s GMail was the stereotypical example of an open beta, retaining that status for more than five years from its initial release in April 2004 until July 2009.

In the automotive realm, with a few notable exceptions, manufacturers have generally kept their equivalent of beta testing strictly in-house, using engineers and test drivers to evaluate new vehicles and systems. Even the final stage of evaluation before vehicles go on sale to the general public has been restricted to employees. For example, at General Motors, anywhere from several dozen to several hundred production-representative examples are distributed to managers and other employees in the final months before the on-sale date in what is known as the captured test fleet.

Beta cars - 003Public beta testing in the auto industry

Perhaps the best-known early example of a public beta test in the car industry was the Chrysler Turbine car program. Between 1963 and 1965, Chrysler built 55 turbine-powered coupes and loaned them to more than 200 drivers around the United States for three months at a time to gather real-world data and driving impressions.

When automakers make it clear that they are running a test program like Project Driveway or BMW’s EV evaluations, customers can go in with their eyes open and know that they might experience some problems. Even if customers pay for the privilege of participating, they probably won’t mind, and the engineers can learn a lot.

On the other hand, when paying tens of thousands of dollars for a regular production vehicle, mass-market customers expect it to work from the start, whether they are buying from startups like Tesla and Fisker or century-old stalwarts like Ford, GM, or BMW. Every one of these companies regularly market their new technologies as features that will make customers’ lives better, but sometimes they don’t.

Perhaps the solution is for auto manufacturers to develop ways to do more real-world beta testing of new technologies so they can find out what doesn’t work before they commit to production, making sure everyone involved knows exactly what to expect.

Chevrolet SS Sets the Stage for the 2013 Daytona 500

Daytona500QualifyingPatrick04The debut of the 2014 Chevrolet SS Sprint Cup race car made a big impression last weekend at the Series time trials in Daytona. After winning the first and second place poles, Danica Patrick of the No. 10 Go Daddy Chevrolet SS and Jeff Gordon of the No. 24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet SS will start side by side and will lead the pack of 43 cars to the start line for the Great American Race this Sunday, February 24th.

Not only is this Danica Patrick’s first NASCAR pole win, but it is the first time in 64-years that a woman will lead the field to the start of the Great American Race.

“We are so proud of Danica Patrick, Tony Gibson and the entire Stewart-Haas team on putting the No. 10 Chevrolet SS on the pole for the 2013 Daytona 500,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “Danica was focused and drove a great line to secure the pole. She gave tremendous credit to her entire #10 team for this accomplishment. She is a determined racer, a team player and we’re proud to have her on Team Chevy.”

“With the all-new Chevrolet SS race car, Danica and her team have put hours in testing, driving and living and breathing with this new car. Her determination both on and off the track put her in the leadership position for this weekend.”

282745-mediumThe rear wheel drive Chevrolet SS has an Iron Block/Aluminum Head V8 engine, 850 horse power, and 550 pounds of torque. And with a curb weight of 3,400 pounds, it packs a punch on the racetrack.

After Patrick’s lap of 45.817 seconds – 196.434 – she earned the top qualifying spot.

“All I have to do is think about going out there, being smooth, not letting the car bind up, running on that yellow line,” said Danica Patrick about the Daytona 500 race this coming weekend. “Outside of that, I think it shows how well prepared Tony and everybody was, how strong the Hendrick engines are, how good the new Chevy SS is. We’ve been fast since practice in January.”

Daytona500QualifyingPatrick03-mediumIn addition to Patrick and Gordon, Ryan Newman, No. 39 Quicken Loans Chevrolet SS (fourth), Tony Stewart, No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet SS (fifth) and Kasey Kahne, No. 5 Farmers Insurance Chevrolet SS (sixth) will round out the additional 5 Chevrolet drivers in the top 6 spots. Not a bad debut for the new Chevrolet SS.

ChevroletSSRaceCar07-medium“I saw Jim Campbell sneak in over there,” said Tony Stewart. “He should be proud. Chevy has done an awesome job. It’s easy today to talk about the engine builder, talk about the chassis builders, the people at the shop. Today we actually get to thank our manufacturers for building us a car that is a fast race car; it’s not just a car with stickers on it. We actually have an SS, a production car, that’s fast. That was proven today.”
