Winter Driving Tips

On February 2nd, Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow around 7:30 am and did not see his shadow, predicting an early spring for us all. We don’t think that Mother nature got the message. Take control of the winter roads with these Winter driving tips from the Maryland Department of Transportation.

Tires

Blog1

Regardless of the season, you should inspect your tires on a monthly basis and before long road trips.

  • Check your tire pressure – ensuring that your tires are inflated to your vehicle’s suggested PSI. You can find this information either in your owner’s manual or on the label inside your driver’s door.
  • All-season tires are not winter tires. All-season tires begin to lose their grip below 45 degrees Fahrenheit and are not as effective in heavy snow and ice.
  • Tires marked with a snowflake are designed for snowy conditions and offer excellent snow traction performance. Winter tires provide better traction, handling and braking. They can shorten braking distances by as much as 25%.
  • Look closely at your tread and replace tires with uneven wear or insufficient tread.

Survival Kit

winter_safety_checklist_survival_kit_caa

No one expects to be stranded on the side of the road. Be prepared for winter driving by keeping a survival kit in your vehicle. Below are some suggestions of items you should keep in your trunk.

  • Gloves, blankets and extra cloths
  • Cell phone and charger
  • Know what to do in an emergency
  • Jumper cables, flashlight, and warning devices such as flares and markers
  • Extra food, water and first aid kit
  • Snow shovel, broom, and ice scraper
  • Abrasive material, such as sand or kitty litter, in case your vehicle gets stuck in the snow

Check Your Vehicle

Blog2

Winter weather is hard on your vehicle and its engine. Here are some tips to help you make sure your vehicle is up to the challenge.

  • Service your vehicle with a Winter tune-up or other routine maintenance
  • Keep an extra jug of high-quality “no-freeze” windshield-washer fluid
  • Keep your gas tank at least half-full to prevent your gas line from freezing.
  • Check your battery
  • Check your cooling system
  • Check your windshield wipers and defrosters

Cleaning Your Vehicle

mohippo_barometerheroimage

Did you know that it is illegal in Maryland to drive with snow on the roof of your car? Safe winter driving starts before you drive off from your driveway.

  • Clear snow and ice from all windows, headlights, mirrors, hood and the roof. After starting your vehicle, wait for the window to defrost completely to allow clear visibility all around.
  • Snow or ice left on your vehicle will blow up onto your windshield while driving and will even blow off your vehicle onto the cars behind you potentially damaging their vehicle or blocking their view.

Practice Safe Winter Driving Habits

winter-road-maintenance

Since every vehicle handles differently during different road conditions, it’s important to take the time to get to know your vehicle under winter weather driving conditions,

  • Practice cold weather driving when your area gets snow, it’s best to practice on an empty lot in full daylight.
  • Drive slowly as it’s harder to control or stop your vehicle on a snow-covered or an icy road.
  • If your vehicle has anti-lock brakes, apply firm pressure, if you have non-anti-lock brakes, pump the brakes gently.
  • Steer into the skid. If you find yourself in a skidding, remain calm and ease your foot off the gas carefully steering in the direction you want the front of your vehicle to go.

Prepare for Driving

WinterDriving_iStockphoto-e1354551763637

The safest strategy is to avoid driving in bad weather conditions. If that isn’t a choice, plan before getting on the road. Driving in poor weather usually takes a lot longer and is more stressful.

  • Tell someone where you are going, your route and your estimated time of arrival.
  • Allow for extra to get to your destination.
  • Be alert, well rested and sober behind the wheel.
  • Wear your seat belt.
  • Stay on main roads and drive carefully by matching your speed to the road and weather conditions.
  • “Know Before you Go.” Call 511 or 1-855-GOMD511 or visit: http://www.md511.org for current travel information.

Winter is an optimal time to slow down and snuggle in. Doing so may not just make you feel happy; it might also help to keep you safe. So many collisions can be easily prevented by driving cautiously, alertly and patiently. It only takes a moment to change a life forever.

Fall Driving Tips

Fall is arguably the most beautiful season. It’s a great time to go for a drive, just to enjoy the scenery. As the weather and road conditions change with the season, the following Fall driving safety tips will help keep you safe. This will give you the opportunity to enjoy the cool crisp air and the beautiful colors of the autumn leaves.

The Dangers of Leaves on the Roads

It is important to treat leaves with the same caution as ice, as they can be just as slippery when wet. When driving you should try to avoid the piles of leaves along the edge of the road, as they can obscure hidden hazards. It is also critical to slow down when driving on a road covered with leaves, especially around turns.

leavesonroad

Adjust for Fewer Hours of Daylight

In the Fall there are fewer hours of daylight. As the hours of daylight decrease, chances are you’ll be doing more driving in dusk or dark conditions. You may even be commuting to or from work in the dark. In the fading light of dusk, it is more difficult to see pedestrians, animals and children, so be sure all your lights are on, working properly and kept clean.

daylight

Changing Weather Conditions

As Fall progresses, the overnight temperatures tend to drop, often below the freezing point. Give yourself extra time to clear your windows of frost/ice before heading out on the road. Make sure your wipers and defrosters are working as they should. While driving, be aware of frost or black ice on the roadways, especially when driving on bridges, or in shaded areas.

Cope with Glare

Always keep a pair of sunglasses in your vehicle. When the sun is hanging low in the sky, it can be blinding if you’re driving toward it.  Sun glare can impact your sight for seconds after exposure, making it hard to see pedestrians, oncoming traffic, or the car in front of you. Keeping your windshield clean is also very important as dirt on the glass can amplify the glare.

Safe driving practices are important through the year. We all should get out and enjoy the season before the winter drives us all indoor.  Be aware of the unique autumn driving hazards and follow our Fall driving safety tips for a safer and more pleasant drive.

Chevrolet Launches Call Me Out App To Discourage Distracted Driving

Chevrolet is launching a new smartphone app that takes aim at distracted driving. This app encourages drivers to leave their phone alone while operating a vehicle. Unlike all the other new smartphone apps being launched daily, Chevy’s Call Me Out app could save your life.

In 2016, distracted driving claimed 3,450 lives in the US, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There isn’t enough data available to prove how many of those cases involved the use of cell phones by drivers. In efforts to help reduce these statistics, Chevrolet hosted a hackathon, challenging college students to propose ways of reducing distracted driving. The framework for the Call Me Out app evolved from this effort.

tag-cloud-hackathon

“As the father of two daughters, I am keenly aware of all the perils that my children face out in the world on a daily basis, and that is why it is so important for GM and Chevrolet to offer technologies that help all of us become safer drivers,” said Alan Batey, president of GM North America and head of Global Chevrolet. “With Call Me Out we are extending our commitment beyond the technologies integrated into GM and Chevy vehicles and are making the app available for Android phone users who drive other vehicle makes and models in an effort to help people change their driving behavior and make our roads safer.”

Here’s how the app works: The Call Me Out app encourages users to enlist friends and family members to record messages, which are then used to remind them to keep their hands off their devices and on the wheel. In addition to the audible message, a graphic of a wagging finger is also displayed on the device. The app uses the phone’s accelerometer and GPS to detect when the phone is being physically picked up while traveling speeds above 5 mph. The app also includes a gaming featuring, with a scoreboard and rankings. The less a phone is handled while driving, the higher the score on the Leaderboard.

The app is currently available as a free download, though only for Android users in the Google Play Store (must be 18 years or older and have a data plan).

Chevrolet Teams Up With Data Scientist To Create Epic Family Road Trip

Here’s a fun article I found in the Chevrolet Pressroom. Enjoy!

Algorithm calculates optimal 48-state route to visit family-favorite attractions

DETROIT — Chevrolet enlisted the expertise of prominent data scientist Randy Olson to help families make the most of their spring road trip plans. Olson created a map using a custom algorithm to plan an efficient route through all 48 contiguous states, with stops at 48 of some of the best-known and most beloved family vacation spots across the United States.

According to a recent national survey commissioned by Chevrolet, spending time with family and exploring new and interesting locations were U.S. parents’ top two favorite aspects of family road trips.

Chevrolet-American-Family-Road-Trip-Map

From national landmarks to thrilling theme parks and everything in between, this data-driven map provides an efficient route between destinations with the least amount of backtracking and stress — an important consideration for traveling families.

“This map is designed so road trippers can start anywhere and drive as much or as little as they like,” said Olson. “Across the U.S., people can create their perfect route, whether staying close to home or embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime 48-state journey.”

To traverse the entire 48-state route, travelers would spend more than 214.56 hours (approximately 9 days) on the road and log 13,389 miles on the odometer — not including time or mileage for overnight breaks and detours.

“Road trips are about creating shared memories and quality time with family and friends,” said Steve Majoros, director of marketing, Chevrolet Cars and Crossovers. “And when on the road, travelers can trust Chevrolet vehicles to help get them where they’re going reliably. Chevy is now the only brand to earn J.D. Power Dependability Awards for cars, trucks and SUVs three years in a row2.”

Chevrolet earned J.D. Power Dependability Awards for Most Dependable Compact SUV, Midsize SUV, Large Light Duty Pickup and Midsize Car.

The national survey commissioned by Chevrolet also found that parents typically bring an average of 6.6 mobile devices in the vehicle on family road trips. Technology offered in vehicles such as the all-new Chevrolet Traverse, Equinox and Trax can help keep travelers entertained and connected with available 4G LTE Wi-Fi2, built-in navigation and Apple CarPlay3 and Android Auto4 compatibility.

Other available Chevrolet technology and safety features that can help enhance a family road trip include:

  • Surround Vision5
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert5
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning5
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert5
  • Rear Park Assist5
  • Rear Seat Reminder6

Chevrolet also worked with Olson to curate shorter road trips for families looking to explore different parts of the country in-depth, including the Midwest, the Northeast, the West Coast, Texas and Florida.
In the spirit of Find New Roads, Chevrolet wishes everyone a safe and happy road trip season.

Celebrating 100 Years of Iconic Chevrolet Trucks

100 year

2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the first production Chevrolet Truck. In celebration of this milestone, we are taking a look back at 10 of the most influential trucks in Chevrolet’s history. Additionally, Chevrolet is honoring its truck centennial with a special announcement!

Here are 10 of the most iconic Chevrolet trucks of the past 100 years:

  • 1918 One-Ton: This was the first production truck from Chevrolet. It took inspiration from the vehicles that were being used in the plants to move parts and pieces. It featured an open cab and was purpose-built.
  • 1929 International Series LD: Eleven years later, this was the first truck with a closed cab. Interior design began to become important for comfort and style.
  • 1938 Half-Ton: The Half-Ton was the first truck created by the newly formed Design Center. This year also saw a deviation in the design of trucks and cars, realizing that trucks needed their own identity.
  • 1947 3100 Series: It’s known for having one of the most iconic designs in automotive history. When people think of vintage trucks, the 3100 Series is likely to come to mind. This was also the beginning of the horizontal-bar front grill instead of the traditional vertical-bar grill.
  • 1955 3124 Series Cameo Carrier: This was the first Chevrolet truck with fleetside design. During this time, styling became a selling point for cars which inspired more focus to be put on a truck’s design as well. Instead of the design ending with the cab, the Cameo Carrier was designed bumper-to-bumper.
  • 1967 C10 Fleetside: Metallic paint was introduced and was used to highlight the subtleties and body lines that weren’t as obvious before.
  • 1973 C30 One-Ton Dually: Many consider this to be the first modern heavy-duty truck. The design reflected the dramatic increase in capability for customers who used their trucks for both work and play.
  • 1988 C/K 1500: The 1988 C/K 1500 was the first truck whose design was influenced by aerodynamics. It looked very advanced for its time and even the interior looked futuristic.
  • 1988 Silverado 1500 LT Z71: This was the first generation using the Silverado nameplate.
  • 2007 Silverado 1500: The 2007 Silverado model brought back the “tough truck” look and feel, even though it was still influenced by design and aerodynamics.

After a century, Chevrolet is still the only manufacturer to offer customers a three-truck portfolio and a full line of special editions. The Chevrolet truck line-up gives customers more options to find the perfect truck to fit their needs and lifestyle. To honor its history, Chevrolet has announced the new 2018 Silverado and 2018 Colorado Centennial Special Editions. These Centennial Editions feature design elements inspired by Chevrolet trucks throughout history, including a Centennial Blue paint, exclusive heritage bowtie emblems, and 100-year badges.

The 2018 Silverado will be available in October, and the 2018 Colorado Centennial Edition will be available in November.

Bonus Fact: The 1918 Chevrolet One-Ton was powered by a four-cylinder engine rated at 36 horsepower. Its top speed was 25mph.
