When your 16 year old son or daughter finally gets their learners permit it can be a huge relief. On some level, they are finally independent. But with this sudden onset of independence comes a large amount of responsibility that, perhaps, they’ve never had before.
You might spend the last ten minutes before they walk out the door listing the different responsibilities they have as a young adult driver: don’t speed, don’t text and drive, wear your seatbelt, don’t have the music too loud, watch out for pedestrians, take care of your passengers; the list goes on and on.
Chevrolet wants to parents to feel confident while their teen driver is on the road, which is
why we created the Teen Driver feature available in the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Malibu.
When the Teen Driver feature is activated, parents create a PIN that allows them to make limits on certain features in the 2016 Malibu. For example, the volume of the radio will only reach a certain level and the vehicle will only accelerate between zero and the speed determined by the PIN holder. The 2016 Malibu will also automatically mute the radio until both the driver and front passenger have securely buckled their seat belts.
With the Report Card tool, parents can monitor:
- the distance their teen drove,
- how many times the over-speed warning was triggered,
- any anti-lock braking situations,
- forward collision alerts/forward braking situation (ie: continuously slamming on the brakes)
By introducing the Teen Driver feature in our 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, and future vehicles, we aim to keep teen drivers safe behind the wheel. “We developed this system so parents could use it as a teaching tool with their kids — they can discuss and reinforce safe driving habits,” said MaryAnn Beebe, a General Motors safety engineer.
This feature comes standard in all 2016 Malibu Premier models and is optional for Malibu LT models. You can learn more about the Teen Driver feature on the Chevrolet Media page and don’t forget to ask a Sales Representative at Bob Bell of Bel Air if the Teen Driver feature is the right choice for you and your teen.
